Event Details

This full-day course focuses on the evidence-based practice of differential diagnosis, manual examination and treatment of patients who have an autonomic, cervicogenic, visual, or vestibular component to their symptoms post-concussion. Course readings will familiarize participants with the most recent relevant literature, allowing the emphasis to be on developing clinical competency in hands-on skills. Therapists will be able to immediately apply acquired skills in the clinical setting.

Course Outline:

8:30 Pathophysiology of concussion; risk factors for poor prognosis; complications

9:00 Diagnosis of post- concussion syndrome; symptom profiles; pattern of recovery

9:30 Differential diagnosis and management of post-traumatic headache and cervicogenic dizziness; upper cervical spine mobility and stress testing; validated dynamic stabilization protocols.

11:00 Diagnosis and management of vestibular rehabilitation and balance dysfunction; habituation techniques; particle repositioning maneuvers

12:30 Lunch 

1:15 Diagnosis and management of visual dysfunction following traumatic brain injury; adaptation and substitution strategies

2:30 Autonomic dysfunction post concussion; graded exercise testing; exertional rehabilitation.

3:30 Sensory integration; and assessment of balance

4:00 Case studies



Registration includes refreshments, course manual, and a certificate of attendance. Additionally, participants will receive an introductory vision kit.

Jacquie has over 20 years of experience working with individuals from a recreational level to Olympic athletes.  During more than fifteen years of clinical and on-field experience at the University of Toronto with the concussion clinic and research staff, Jacquie treated a high volume of complex concussion patients, with a focus on return to play using a continuum of care that included preseason questionnaires, acute on-field assessment of injured athletes, management of acute and chronic symptoms, and return to play exercise progressions. As well, she completed her vestibular competency training at Emory University.  She has been a clinical instructor at the University of Toronto, Department of Physical Therapy, and past chair of the Sport Physiotherapy Canada (SPC), Ontario. Her doctoral research focused on the development of the Concussion Recovery Questionnaire (CORE-Q), a functional status outcome measure for individuals with persistent post-concussion symptoms.  Her work seeks to measure the impact of concussion in order to inform clinical management based on patient priorities.  She is currently a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario investigatinng the impact of concussion on children.
