Event Details

If you need to guide, push, or position a load, a linear actuator may be the solution. These devices convert the rotational motion of an electric motor. They turn it into push and pull movements. Hence, they are perfect for lifting and descending heavy loads. But how much weight can an electric linear actuator lift? It is important to know this parameter. It helps to determine whether this type of device is suitable for your application.

Speed and Thrust, Two Important Parameters

Rod-type electric cylinders are most commonly used for lifting loads. They use a ball screw or an acme screw to convert the rotational motion into a lifting motion. These devices can move a load at a speed within 12 ips to 50 ips. Their thrust goes from 400 lb (181 kg) to 5000 lb (2.2 TON). This is the equivalent of the maximal weight a linear actuator can lift.

Factors That Affect the Positioning of the Load

To choose linear actuators for your application, you must decide where and how fast the load will go. The weight of the load will determine the thrust you need. One parameter affects the other, so you should find the right tradeoff between all of them.

Ball Screw or Acme Screw?

Now, you have to decide whether you need a rod-type cylinder with a ball screw or acme screw. Let us consider the following list of pros and cons to ease the decision:

  • Using an acme screw results in lower speeds. Hence, for faster lifts a ball screw is better;
  • Acme screws, however, do not back drive when the thrust stops. Hence, acme screws are better to hold the load when the power supply ceases;
  • Actuators with ball screws have higher duty cycles. Hence, if you need a duty cycle above 60%, choose the ball screw options.

It is not just the maximal weight that an actuator can lift what matters. You must consider many other factors. Only then, you can count on the efficiency of your device with an actuator.
