THE TOBACCONIST follows the journey of seventeen-year old Franz, who moves to Vienna shortly before the Nazi occupation. After his mother can no longer afford to keep him in their small lakeside community, Franz is sent to be an apprentice at a tobacco shop where the owner, Otto, sells to increasingly ostracized Jews and communists, including the aged Sigmund Freud. Franz befriends Freud after he turns to the doctor for advice on wooing Anezka, a local dancer. The young man must grow up fast, however, as political tensions rise in the city and his personal problems become absorbed by the impending chaos of war. A traditional coming-of-age tale with a rich historical backdrop, director Nikolaus Leytner explores a relationship between personal and national tensions through a compelling narrative and surreal dream sequences.

Presented with English subtitles.
