Event Details

Course objectives emphasize the continuum of care from pre-injury baseline testing using the comprehensive R2P Screen™ through acute on-field assessment, and symptom management, to sport-specific return to play protocols in the context of the most recent literature. Emergency head and facial injuries not to be missed following head trauma will also be discussed.  Additionally, participants will gain an understanding of how to prescribe rest, and the impact of concussion on academic performance at school and in the workplace.  Return-to-Learn strategies will be discussed and applied to various case studies.  Short- and long-term implication of mild traumatic brain injury will be discussed, including chronic traumatic encephalopathy.  Interactive learning is emphasized through hand-on practice and case studies.

Course Outline

8:30 Pathophysiology of concussion; risk factors for prolonged recovery; R2P Screen™: beyond basic baseline testing; incorporating orthopaedic assessments, ocular motor, balance tests, and medical history for a comprehensive assessment of baseline scores; ImPACT neurocognitive testing.

9:30 Acute on-field assessment; SCAT3; Second Impact Syndrome; associated traumatic head and facial injuries not to miss.

11:00 Validated sideline assessment tools King-Devick Test and Sway Balance app; Vestibular/Ocular Motor Screening Assessment.

12:15 Lunch

1:00 Return to Learn strategies; discussion of step-wise progression to reintroduce cognitive load; recommendations for parents and educators.

2:00 Return to Play guidelines; case studies developing individual exercise progressions based on multidimensional impairment specific principles; sport specific examples will be used to develop skill training specific to an athlete’s sport.

3:30 Sport-specific concussion risk; short-term and long-term risks of mild traumatic brain injuries including CTE; when to retire from competition.

4:00 Discussion and case studies.

Jacquie has over 20 years of experience working with individuals from a recreational level to Olympic athletes.  During more than fifteen years of clinical and on-field experience at the University of Toronto with the concussion clinic and research staff, Jacquie treated a high volume of complex concussion patients, with a focus on return to play using a continuum of care that included preseason questionnaires, acute on-field assessment of injured athletes, management of acute and chronic symptoms, and return to play exercise progressions. As well, she completed her vestibular competency training at Emory University.  She has been a clinical instructor at the University of Toronto, Department of Physical Therapy, and past chair of the Sport Physiotherapy Canada (SPC), Ontario. Her doctoral research focused on the development of the Concussion Recovery Questionnaire (CORE-Q), a functional status outcome measure for individuals with persistent post-concussion symptoms.  Her work seeks to measure the impact of concussion in order to inform clinical management based on patient priorities.  She is currently a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario investigatinng the impact of concussion on children.
